The threshold was supposed to be constant. Fifty-eight decibels. He'd tested it at six different volume levels and confirmed the trigger point with three separate measurement runs. The anomaly responded to sound above that threshold and not below it. The rule was simple and consistent.

But the scanner now showed the threshold at sixty-one decibels.

Ellis stared at the reading. He checked the instrument's calibration. Normal. He checked the measurement protocol. Consistent with his previous runs. The threshold had shifted upward by three decibels.

He looked at the loop timing. The last reset had been forty-three minutes ago. The interval was fluctuating: forty-one, forty-seven, forty-three. The current cycle was holding at forty-three. He cross-referenced the threshold reading against the cycle timing.

Then his radio crackled. A whisper from Reeves, up at the landing: "Reset in four minutes."

Ellis checked the scanner again. The threshold was rising. Sixty-two decibels now. It was climbing in a smooth, continuous progression.

"Reeves," he whispered. "What's the cycle timing."

"Forty-three minutes. Reset in three minutes, forty seconds."

The threshold hit sixty-four. Then sixty-five. Then it stopped, holding steady at sixty-five decibels for approximately thirty seconds. Then it began to fall. Sixty-three. Sixty-one. Fifty-nine. Fifty-seven. Fifty-six.

It bottomed out at fifty-five decibels, three decibels below the original threshold, and held there for thirty seconds. Then it began to rise again.

Ellis watched the numbers climb. Fifty-six. Fifty-eight. Sixty. Sixty-two. The pattern was rhythmic, a smooth oscillation that rose and fell over a period of approximately two minutes.

Two minutes. The loop's cycle was forty-three minutes. The threshold's oscillation period was two minutes. The ratio was roughly twenty-to-one, the same fractal relationship he'd documented between the temporal displacement and the loop interval. Forty-seven seconds to forty-seven minutes. Now two minutes to forty-three minutes.

The loop was modulating the pressure anomaly.

He wrote it down, his pen moving fast: Pressure threshold oscillating. Range: 55–65 dB. Period: ~2 minutes. Correlation with loop cycle: confirmed. The two anomalies are interacting. The loop's temporal pattern is modulating the pressure anomaly's governing rule.

His breathing went shallow.

The threshold was already beginning its next oscillation. Ellis watched it climb.

He needed to get this to Maren.

She was near the stairwell landing, conferring with Briggs about Osei's condition. The agent was conscious but pale, his breathing still labored, his left arm immobilized in a makeshift sling. Maren's jaw was set. Her eyes moved between the scanner and the stairwell, counting options.

Ellis approached. He kept his voice low. "The pressure threshold is changing."

Maren's attention shifted to him. "Changing how."

"It's oscillating. Rising and falling in a pattern that matches the loop's cycle." He held up the scanner. The threshold was at sixty-one decibels and climbing. "It was fifty-eight when I tested it in the basement. Now it ranges from fifty-five to sixty-five, cycling every two minutes."

She read the scanner display. Her eyes moved across the oscillation pattern, the smooth rise and fall, the correlation with the loop timing.

"The loop is affecting the basement anomaly."

"Yes. They're not independent. They're interacting in real time."

"Which means the threshold we documented is already wrong."

"It's not wrong. It's incomplete. The actual threshold depends on where we are in the oscillation cycle. At the bottom of the cycle, fifty-five decibels. At the top, sixty-five. The rule is variable now."

Maren's jaw tightened. She looked toward the stairwell, the door that led down to the basement, to the anomaly whose governing rule was no longer fixed.

"How long has this been happening."

"I just noticed it. The oscillation pattern suggests it started recently, possibly after the compression event, possibly as part of the loop's destabilization. I don't have enough data to say when it began."

"But it's accelerating."

"The loop's destabilization is accelerating. If the interaction follows the same pattern, the oscillation range will widen. The threshold could drop below fifty-five or rise above sixty-five."

She was quiet for a moment. The corridor's light flickered. A wall surface released a pulse of warmth, mnemonic residue bleeding through the destabilizing pattern.

"If the threshold drops low enough," Maren said, "normal breathing could trigger compression."

"Yes."

"And if it rises high enough, the anomaly becomes effectively inert."

"Temporarily. Until the next cycle."

She looked at him. Three seconds. "The two anomalies are becoming one."

"I think they might already be one. I think we've been treating them as separate because we discovered them separately. But the interaction pattern suggests they're a single system with two components."

The words hung in the corridor's fluctuating light. Maren didn't respond immediately. She was processing, the same calculation she'd done when Ellis reported the basement connection, but now with more data and fewer options.

"The building," she said.

"Yes."

"The entire building is the anomaly."

"I think so. The third floor and the basement are connected through the loop's reset gap. The interaction is real-time. The effect zones are—"

He stopped. His scanner was showing something new.

The pressure anomaly's effect zone, the spatial region where compression occurred in response to sound, was expanding. The boundary, which had been confined to the basement during his testing, was now extending upward. The scanner showed pressure effects registering on the second floor. And on the third floor, the loop's spatial repetition was beginning to distort, the corridor's dimensions fluctuating in a pattern that matched the basement's compression rhythm.

The effect zones were overlapping.

"Maren." He held up the scanner. "The zones are merging."

She read the display. The pressure boundary was climbing, from the basement into the first floor, from the first floor into the second. The loop's spatial distortion was extending downward, the stairwell's geometry beginning to repeat in short, stuttering loops that existed simultaneously with the pressure field.

The building was becoming a single integrated anomalous environment. The two threat spaces, the loop's temporal-spatial repetition and the pressure anomaly's sound-triggered compression, were merging into a compound zone with rules that neither anomaly followed independently.

"Everyone," Maren said. Her voice was low, and the team moved. "Stairwell landing. Now. Quietly."

The team converged. Reeves from the monitoring position, Briggs from Osei's side, Tan from the corridor. Tan was the team's structural analyst, a quiet woman who'd been mapping the corridor's spatial distortions since the second cycle. Osei was helped to his feet, his face gray, his breathing still wet. They gathered on the stairwell landing, the space between the third floor's loop and the basement's pressure field.

Ellis looked at his scanner. The merge was accelerating. The pressure boundary was now on the second floor. The loop's spatial distortion was extending into the stairwell itself. The steps below them flickered with a faint repetition, each step existing in two positions simultaneously, the geometry stuttering between the loop's pattern and the pressure field's compression.

"The stairwell," Ellis said. "It's in both zones."

Maren looked at the steps below them. The flickering was visible, the concrete surfaces repeating in a pattern that matched some combination of the loop's forty-three-minute cycle and the pressure anomaly's two-minute oscillation.

"We can't stay here," she said.

"No. The compound zone is expanding. If the merge completes, the entire building will be a single anomalous environment with emergent rules."

"Emergent rules."

"Rules that neither anomaly follows independently. The interaction produces new behavior. We don't know what it does yet."

She looked at the team. Five people on a stairwell landing, between two merging anomalies, with one of them injured and the building itself becoming something none of them had a framework for.

"The Bureau needs to know," Maren said. "Reeves, send a situation report. Compound zone, two anomalies merging, emergent behavior, team trapped. Request immediate containment support."

Reeves nodded and moved to his radio, keeping the volume below the oscillating threshold, which was currently at fifty-nine decibels and falling.

Ellis watched the scanner. The merge was progressing. The pressure boundary reached the third floor. The loop's spatial distortion filled the basement. The two effect zones overlapped completely, and the building's anomalous signature on the scanner resolved into a single, unified reading.

One anomaly. One compound zone. One set of emergent rules that no one had documented yet.

The corridor above them flickered with a new pattern. The walls repeated in a rhythm distinct from the loop's cycle and the pressure anomaly's oscillation. The air pressure pulsed in time with the loop's cycle. The sub-audible frequency in Ellis's teeth synchronized with the threshold oscillation, producing a compound rhythm that existed between the two.

The building was one thing now. And they were inside it.
