My Soul Is a Prison for Forbidden Spells
Chapter 10 - The Price of Power
Chapter 10 · 1,235 words
He found a place where the corridor widened into a maintenance alcove, a recess in the stone wall barely large enough for one person, shielded from the main passage by a junction housing that hummed with containment ward energy. No one would come here. The lower levels were empty, the evacuation complete, the Sealing Division pulled back to the upper corridor.
Cyran pressed his back against the cold stone and turned his attention inward.
Cell 1.
The black flame was waiting. He could feel it the moment his focus shifted past the surface of his awareness into the prison's architecture, a surge of heat behind his sternum, a widening of pressure, the predatory attention of an entity that had been restless and bored and was now, suddenly, very interested.
Noctis did not speak in words. It spoke in sensation. And the sensation it offered now was an opening. A door held ajar. The flame was showing him what cooperation looked like, the power it could lend, the destruction it could enact, the black fire that would burn through any magical defense the healing spell could muster.
The offer was real. The power was real. And Noctis knew he needed it.
*Price.*
The word did not arrive as language. It arrived as a pulling, a sensation behind his sternum that drew his attention inward, past the flame's heat, past the cell's boundaries, into a space where memory lived.
Then the flame showed him what it wanted.
An image. A face.
It formed in his mind's eye the way Noctis's images always formed, vivid, immediate, and dissolving at the edges before he could fix the details in place. But this one was different. This one was a person.
A face he almost recognized. The almost of someone important, someone whose name was on the tip of a tongue he no longer had. The features were warm. The expression was one he wanted to see again. A voice accompanied the face, speaking a word he could not quite hear, and with the voice came a sensation of warmth, safety, the feeling of being known by someone who knew him completely.
The image held for three seconds. Long enough for him to feel the pull of attachment, a desperate, grasping need to hold the face in place, to hear the word, to remember the warmth.
Then Noctis let the image begin to dissolve.
*This is the price,* the flame's attention said. *This memory. This face. This voice. This warmth. Give it to me and I will burn for you.*
Cyran's hands were clenched against the stone wall. His knuckles were white. His breathing had gone shallow.
He did not know whose face it was. He did not know what the word was. He did not know what the warmth meant or where it came from or why it mattered so much that the flame had chosen this particular memory from all the fragments of his erased past.
But he knew it mattered. The intensity of his own reaction told him that. The desperate attachment, the grasping need. These were proportional to something load-bearing, something that held up the structure of who he was.
And he was about to let the flame eat it.
The healing spell was still moving through the lower levels. Another patient. Another correction. Another piece of harm disguised as help. He could feel the golden light's compulsion through the sealing zone's infrastructure, a warm, persistent pressure that would not stop until every imperfection it found had been "fixed" into something worse.
He did not have another option. He did not have another source of power. The containment model was complete and the only missing piece was force, and the only force available was the force that ate memory.
*Yes.*
The word was not spoken. It was decided.
Noctis accepted.
The pulling behind his sternum became a torrent. The memory, the face, the voice, the warmth, was drawn toward the flame like thread toward a fire, and Cyran felt it go. It was taken in a single, irreversible act, pulled from the space where it had lived and consumed.
The face vanished. The voice stopped. The warmth extinguished.
And in its place was a gap. A space where something had been, now simply absent. The way you notice a missing tooth more than you notice the ones that are still there. The way a room sounds different after you remove a piece of furniture, even if you cannot name what was there.
Something was gone. He would never know what it contained. He would never recover it. The memory was consumed, broken down into fuel, converted into the energy that now began to flow through his body from Cell 1.
Noctis's power. Black flame. The heat of it moved through his chest and down his arms, settling into his hands as a readiness, a predatory focus that was his to wield.
The physical sensation of the loss was a coldness behind his sternum. The cold of absence. Of a space that used to be warm. A momentary vertigo, the ground shifting beneath him, and the taste of something lost, metallic, faint, like blood from a bitten tongue.
He stood in the alcove with his hands open at his sides and black flame flickering across his palms. The heat in his hands was enough to melt through any ward line he had ever felt. He could feel the capacity to burn through magical defenses, to create a containment window that no healing spell's correction compulsion could resist. It was exactly what he needed.
It cost exactly what he had been told it would cost.
From the deepest part of his awareness, at the base of the architecture where Cell 13 sat in its sealed silence, something shifted.
The coldness of the 13th cell intensified. The cold of attention. Of something that had been watchful and was now watching more closely. The pressure at the edge of his awareness increased, sharpened, focused.
The entity in Cell 13 was not whispering. Not yet. But its attention had a quality he had not felt before. Interest. The specific, alert interest of something that had been waiting for exactly this moment.
He had used Warden Perception extensively during the crisis. He had negotiated with Noctis. He had paid the memory price. And the 13th cell had responded to every step with increasing intensity.
A pattern. The entity responded to his use of Warden abilities. It became more active when he exercised his role as warden, when he investigated, when he negotiated, when he paid the costs that came with power.
He filed the observation alongside everything else. The journal, when he could get to it, would need a new entry. But the filing was automatic, a habit now, the methodical documentation that had become his primary tool for navigating a system he did not fully understand.
The black flame burned in his hands. The 13th cell watched. The healing spell drifted through the lower levels, correcting everything it touched.
Cyran closed his hands into fists, containing the flame, and stepped out of the alcove into the corridor.
The containment model was ready. The power was paid for. The price was gone, a face, a voice, a warmth that he would never remember losing, because he could no longer remember what was there to lose.
He walked toward the golden light.
