The cutting tool vibrated through Tavian's gloves, a frequency he'd learned to read the way other people read faces. Titanium-carbide alloy. He could feel it in the resistance pattern before the blade bit deep enough to confirm. The mech arm lay across the disposal cradle, its joint housing cracked open like a wound that had stopped bleeding hours ago. Scorch marks radiated from the elbow actuator. Whatever had killed this machine had come from inside.

Tavian adjusted the blade angle three degrees counterclockwise. The alloy parted cleanly along the seam he'd identified, and he set the cutting tool down on the magnetic strip beside the cradle. With both hands now free, he worked the housing apart using a flat-head spreader, fingers finding the bolt sequence by feel. Six bolts, star pattern, corroded at the base. He applied solvent to each one in order and waited forty seconds, not thirty and not fifty, before engaging the extractor.

The bolts came clean. No stripped heads, no broken shafts. He placed them in the salvage container labeled for reusable fasteners, then turned his attention to the actuator core.

The disposal bay smelled of scorched metal and recycled air, the ventilation system working at partial capacity again. Three other workers were spread across the bay, each at their own cradle, each making the sounds of labor: the whine of cutting tools, the dull impact of separation clamps, the occasional curse when a bolt refused to cooperate. Tavian didn't look up. He had the actuator core exposed now, and the damage was worse than the external scorch suggested. Thermal cascade. The internal windings had fused at the third junction, sending a feedback surge through the control wiring that had melted the connector block into a single mass of slag.

He catalogued the damage in his head as he worked. Actuator core: salvageable if the windings could be separated, maybe forty percent recovery on the copper. Connector block: total loss. Control wiring: the first two meters were gone, but past the fusion point the insulation held. He could strip and sort maybe six meters of usable wire.

His hands moved through the process with a precision that had nothing to do with hurry. Each component went into its correct container. Each separation was clean. He didn't damage salvageable material, and he didn't leave recoverable value in the waste stream. The senior crew members who checked his output at end of shift found nothing to criticize in the sorting. They found other things to criticize instead.

The bay door cycled open behind him. Tavian didn't turn around. He knew the footsteps. Heavy boot pattern, the particular cadence of someone who walked like the floor owed them space. Orson. The pilot's sync rating was eighty-seven percent, the highest aboard the Drift, and he moved through the disposal bay the way water moves through a channel. He didn't notice what he passed over.

Orson stopped at the cradle two stations down, where a junior technician was separating armor plating from a destroyed leg assembly. They exchanged words Tavian couldn't hear and didn't try to. The conversation lasted thirty seconds. Then the footsteps continued, passing behind Tavian's cradle without pausing, without any shift in rhythm that would indicate he'd been noticed.

Tavian's hands didn't stop. He was separating the fused windings now, using a micro-pick to work between the layers where the heat had welded them together. The pick found the boundary between fused and intact copper, and he followed it like a seam in stone.

The pilot's footsteps reached the bay door. It cycled open. Closed. The sound faded down the corridor.

Tavian worked the pick deeper. The winding separated, a thin ribbon of copper unfurling from the mass, and he coiled it carefully into the recovery container. His jaw was tight. The work was easy. His jaw tightened from the passage that hadn't registered as a passage at all. Orson hadn't walked past him. Orson had walked past the space he occupied, the way you walk past a tool rack or a bulkhead fitting.

He finished the winding separation and moved to the next component.

Forty minutes later, he was repairing a hull plate. The plate was standard frontier-grade composite, cracked along a stress line that ran from the mounting bracket to the edge of the blast shield. A proper repair meant cutting out the damaged section, fitting a replacement patch, and sealing the joints with thermal compound. Tavian had cut the damaged section free and was fitting the patch when Halden came over.

Halden was the senior disposal technician. His own sync rating of thirty-one percent had earned him a position technically above maintenance crew but practically the same thing: he supervised the people who cleaned up what the pilots broke. He stood behind Tavian long enough for the shadow to fall across the work surface before Tavian looked up.

"You're still on that plate?"

"The stress fracture extends past the visible line," Tavian said. "I need to trace it before I seal the patch or it'll crack again under load."

Halden leaned forward and looked at the plate. He didn't touch it. "Trace it later. We've got three more cradles backed up in queue and the shift ends in ninety minutes. Put the patch on and move."

"If I seal it now without tracing the full fracture—"

"I didn't ask for a maintenance lecture." Halden's voice was flat, the particular flatness of a man who had stopped being interested in his job years ago and now measured his days by how little effort he could expend. "Patch it. Move. That's the order."

Tavian looked at the plate. The fracture was there. He could feel it in the composite's resistance pattern when he pressed his thumbnail along the surface, a subtle wrongness that the instruments would confirm but that his hands already knew. If he sealed the patch without addressing it, the plate would hold for maybe twenty cycles. Then it would fail, probably during a maneuver that put lateral stress on the mounting bracket, and whoever was responsible for the repair would have to do it again.

He picked up the patch and set it in position. Applied the thermal compound. Sealed the joints.

Halden watched for another five seconds, then turned and walked back toward the shift supervisor's station.

Tavian's hands were steady on the sealing tool. His jaw tightened again, the muscle jumping once beneath the skin. He finished the seal, checked the bond, and set the plate aside in the completed-repair rack. Then he sat very still for three seconds. Three seconds in which nothing moved except his breathing. Then he stood and pulled the next piece of wreckage onto the cradle.

The rest of the shift passed in the usual rhythm. Cut, separate, sort, repair. The bay's ambient sounds filled the space: tools, machinery, the low drone of the ventilation system struggling with metal dust. Tavian worked through two more cradle loads. A damaged knee joint from a heavy assault frame. A shattered sensor array with salvageable optics. His hands knew what to do with each piece, and he did it well.

When the shift horn sounded, he cleaned his tools, wiped down the cradle, and logged his output at the terminal. The system recorded the quantities: recovered materials, completed repairs, sorted components. It recorded them without comment. It didn't record the quality of the work. It didn't record that the knee joint he'd separated would function for another four hundred cycles without maintenance, or that the sensor array optics he'd salvaged were graded above the ship's standard replacement stock. It recorded numbers.

He was pulling off his work gloves when Dex came over from the adjacent cradle. Dex was two years older, built wider, with the kind of face that looked like it had been assembled from spare parts and then improved by time. His sync rating was twelve percent, enough to qualify for light utility mech operation and not enough to matter to anyone who controlled the important assignments.

"Hey." Dex leaned against the cradle frame. "You trace that fracture on the hull plate?"

"Yeah."

"And Halden told you to seal it anyway."

Tavian nodded.

Dex made a sound that was half sigh, half laugh. "It'll crack."

"Twenty cycles. Maybe less if the next pilot pushes lateral hard."

"Then it'll be someone else's problem." Dex pushed off the cradle. "You want to head to the mess? I heard they got the reconstituted protein today. The good kind."

"The kind that tastes like protein?"

"The kind that doesn't taste like the packaging."

Tavian almost smiled. Almost. He pulled his gloves off completely and tucked them into his belt. "Yeah. Okay."

They walked out of the disposal bay together, through the corridor that connected the work section to the crew quarters. The Drift was a frontier salvage vessel, mid-size by fleet standards, built for endurance rather than comfort. The corridors were narrow, the walls scarred with the accumulated damage of a hundred docking operations, and the air always carried a faint metallic taste from the filtration system. Tavian knew every section of the ship. He'd repaired panels in most of them, replaced conduit in the lower decks, fixed the waste recycling unit on C-deck twice in the last month alone. He knew the ship the way a surgeon knows a body: by the locations where things went wrong.

Their eyes slid past him without pause. He was part of the ship's infrastructure, present and functional and unremarkable, the same as the lighting panels or the access hatches.

Dex walked beside him, and that was the difference. Dex looked at him. Dex saw him.

"Same time tomorrow," Dex said as they reached the mess door.

"Same time."

Tavian went in alone. He took a tray, loaded it with the reconstituted protein, which did in fact taste slightly less like the packaging than usual, and sat at a corner table. The mess was half full. Two pilots sat at the center table, talking about a salvage run in the outer belt. A navigation officer reviewed charts on her tablet. Halden was at the far wall, eating alone, not looking at anyone.

Tavian ate slowly. His hands were tired in the specific way they got after a full shift, the muscles in his forearms tight, the joints in his fingers slightly stiff. It was a good tired. The work had been real, and he'd done it well, and the tiredness was proof of that.

He thought about the hull plate. He thought about the fracture he'd traced with his thumbnail and the seal he'd applied over Halden's objection. In twenty cycles it would crack, and someone would have to fix it, and nobody would remember that he'd tried to do it right the first time.

He finished eating, cleaned his tray, and carried it to the return slot. On his way back to his quarters he passed the evaluation wing, a set of rooms along B-deck where the synchronization testing equipment was housed. The door was closed. The evaluation cycle wasn't for another three days.

He walked past without slowing.

In his quarters, he sat on the edge of his bunk and looked at his hands. They were calloused in specific places: the pads of his fingers, the base of his palms, the inside of his thumb where the cutting tool rested during long operations. They were good hands. They could feel the difference between titanium-carbide and tungsten alloy by vibration alone. They could find a stress fracture in composite material by touch. They could separate fused windings without damaging the copper beneath.

They were good hands, and they were the only thing about him that anyone on this ship had any use for.

He lay back on the bunk and stared at the ceiling. The metal was cold and slightly textured, covered in the same scarring that marked every surface on the Drift. He closed his eyes.

Tomorrow would be the same. The cradles, the wreckage, the cutting tools, the sorting. Halden would find something to criticize. The pilots would walk past without seeing him. The evaluation cycle was in three days, and the result would be the same result it had been for the last four years.

Zero.

The ceiling waited above him, cold and indifferent, its scars invisible in the dark.
