The Drift arrived at the debris field at the start of the third watch cycle. Tavian was in the disposal bay when the ship's deceleration thrusters fired, the vibration running through the deck plating and into his boots. He paused, cutting tool idle, and waited for the ship to settle. The intercom crackled with the captain's voice. Standard salvage arrival briefing, coordinates and field composition, instruction to deploy disposal teams to the outer edge.
The debris field was uncharted. That much was unusual. Most salvage operations worked known fields: the aftermath of documented battles, the remnants of collapsed mining operations, the scattered remains of stations that had exceeded their operational lifespan. An uncharted field meant something had happened here that nobody had recorded, and the composition of the debris would tell them what.
Tavian finished the component he was working on, logged his output, and reported to the deployment bay. The disposal team was loading into EVA suits for the field walk, standard procedure for outer-edge clearance. He suited up with the rest of the crew, checked his seals, and cycled through the airlock.
The debris field stretched in every direction. Fragments of destroyed mechs and ships tumbled slowly through the vacuum, caught in the residual momentum of whatever event had scattered them. The Drift's work lights cut through the dust and debris-static, illuminating fragments in harsh white relief. A shattered leg assembly drifted past, its knee joint still partially articulated, the actuator housing cracked open to reveal the fused windings inside. Tavian catalogued the damage automatically. Thermal cascade, same pattern he'd seen a dozen times before.
The outer edge was the least damaged zone. Whatever had destroyed these machines had come from the center of the field outward, and the pieces at the periphery had survived with more of their structure intact. Tavian's assignment was to tag and assess the outer-edge fragments, identifying anything with salvage value and marking the rest for the disposal team's cutting crews.
He moved through the debris with practiced efficiency. Tag, assess, mark. The work was familiar even though the environment wasn't. Different wreckage, same process. His suit's diagnostic scanner swept each fragment as he approached, reading the material composition and relic residue levels. Most of the debris was standard military-grade, human manufacture, no relic signatures, salvageable only for raw materials.
He worked for two hours. The disposal team's cutting crews moved through the zone behind him, separating and collecting the fragments he tagged. The work was routine. His attention was on the process, tag, assess, mark, and his mind was in the place it always went during routine work: a quiet, focused state where his hands did the job and his thoughts ran along the surface of what he was doing without diving deep.
The discarded sensor was half-buried in a cluster of hull fragments. Tavian almost passed it. It was small, a standard environmental monitor, the kind mounted on exterior hull surfaces to track radiation levels and micro-impact frequency. Its casing was cracked, its mounting bracket sheared off, and its contact array was corroded to the point where two of the three connection points were non-functional. By all standard assessment, it was waste.
His scanner swept it and moved on.
Tavian took two steps past the cluster and stopped.
Something was wrong with the reading. He looked back at the scanner display. The sensor's energy signature was still registering, faint, barely above background noise, but present. That wasn't unusual in itself. Discarded sensors sometimes retained residual charge in their capacitors, producing a weak signal long after the host system was destroyed. But the waveform was wrong.
He knelt beside the cluster and pulled the sensor free. The casing cracked further under his grip, and a flake of corroded contact material fell away. He held the sensor in both hands and brought up the detailed scan on his suit's display.
The waveform didn't match.
Tavian had spent four years looking at relic residue signatures. The disposal bay's database contained reference patterns for every known civilization's relic technology: the harmonic frequencies of the Lithari, the biological markers of the Veln, the gravitational distortions of the Saurath. Fifteen more civilizations had relics in the catalogue. Each signature had a specific decay curve, the way the energy faded over time, the pattern of dissipation, the residual harmonics that lingered after the primary signal degraded.
This waveform didn't match any of them.
He ran the comparison. The scanner cycled through the database, matching the sensor's energy signature against every known relic pattern. The result came back negative across the board. A complete negative. No partial match, no degraded version with noise contamination. Nothing in the database matched.
Tavian held the sensor still. His breathing slowed. The feeling that came over him was the opposite of excitement. It was the feeling his entire body produced when his diagnostic instinct engaged: a narrowing of attention, a quieting of everything except the data in front of him, a focusing of his mind on the problem the way a lens focuses light.
Something was producing this reading. The sensor had been detecting it before it was discarded. The energy signature was too consistent for residual charge, too structured for background noise. Whatever this signal was, it had a source, and the source was physical and nearby.
He looked at the waveform again. The pattern was unlike anything in the database, but it wasn't random. There was structure in the signal, a repeating sequence that cycled every 4.7 seconds, with sub-harmonics that modulated in a pattern his experience told him was deliberate. Natural radiation didn't produce repeating sequences. Degraded relic residue didn't produce sub-harmonic modulation.
This was something else.
He checked the signal strength. The sensor had been detecting it at a level that suggested proximity, close enough for the monitor's degraded instruments to pick up clearly, which meant the source was within a few hundred meters at most. He adjusted the scanner's directional array and swept the surrounding debris.
The signal was stronger to his left. Deeper into the field.
Tavian stood. He looked back toward the Drift. The ship's hull was visible beyond the nearest cluster of wreckage, its work lights a steady reference point. The disposal team's cutting crews were working the outer edge, their suit lights moving in slow patterns through the debris. Nobody was watching him. Nobody would notice if he moved deeper into the field for a few minutes.
His assigned task was to tag and assess the outer-edge fragments. The signal source was outside his assigned zone. The correct procedure was to log the anomalous reading, flag it for the survey team's review, and continue his assigned work. The survey team would investigate when they had time, which might be days, and they would use standard survey equipment, which would tell them whatever the database already knew.
The database didn't know this pattern.
Tavian looked at the sensor in his hands. The cracked casing, the corroded contacts, the faint signal still pulsing from its damaged core. His diagnostic instinct was pulling at him, the same pull he'd felt a hundred times when a mech's systems showed him a fault that the instruments hadn't caught yet. The pull that said: something is wrong here, and you can see it, and if you walk away it will stay wrong.
He tucked the sensor into his suit's storage pouch and moved deeper into the debris field.
The wreckage was denser here, the fragments larger and more heavily damaged. He picked his way through a field of shattered armor plates, each one scarred with impact marks that told a story of violence he couldn't read. The signal on his scanner grew stronger as he moved, the waveform maintaining its repeating sequence, the sub-harmonics modulating in their deliberate pattern.
He climbed over a collapsed hull section, the remains of what might have been a small transport, its interior long since vented to vacuum, and dropped down on the other side. His boot landed on something that wasn't metal. He looked down.
The surface beneath his foot was dark. A different dark from scorched metal or shadowed alloy, a black so complete that his suit lights seemed to sink into it rather than reflect off it. He shifted his weight and knelt, brushing debris away from the surface with his gloved hand.
The black extended. Smooth, unmarked, unlike anything around it. The wreckage surrounding this spot was corroded, pitted, scarred, the product of destruction and time. This surface was none of those things. It was intact.
Tavian's scanner was reading the signal strongly now. The source was close. Very close.
He brushed more debris away. The black surface extended further than he'd expected, a continuous plane that curved slightly, suggesting a larger form beneath the wreckage. His hands moved faster, clearing fragments, pushing aside pieces of destroyed equipment that had been piled. He noticed this now, he noticed it clearly. Piled in a specific pattern over the black surface. Arranged, not randomly scattered.
His breathing was slow. His hands were steady. His diagnostic instinct had fully engaged, and every part of his attention was on the work of clearing what lay beneath.
The signal was coming from underneath this wreckage. And whatever was underneath it was not destroyed.
