The debris field was silent during off-shift hours.
Tavian moved through the wreckage with his suit lamps on low, picking his way through the same path he'd carved during his initial excavation. The hull fragments he'd shifted to reach the mech were still arranged as he'd left them, a narrow corridor of twisted metal leading to the buried form beneath. His boots crunched on crystallized residue, and somewhere deeper in the field, a settling girder groaned and shifted.
The mech waited where he'd left it.
He knelt beside the form and placed his bare hand on the chest plate. The alloy was cold, a chill that radiated from within, deeper than space exposure. The surface absorbed his helmet lamp's light, giving nothing back. Under his fingertips, the texture shifted between smooth and micro-pitted, skin weathered by centuries of burial.
He'd felt warmth here. Last night, in this exact spot, warmth had bloomed under his palm and something had reached through the interface port and touched his mind.
Now there was only cold.
Tavian withdrew his hand and pulled his diagnostic scanner from his kit. He wasn't here to force contact. He was here because that was what he did. He took care of broken things. And this machine, whatever it was, had been buried in wreckage for longer than humanity had been reaching for the stars. It was damaged. Corroded. Dormant.
He could work with that.
The scanner's readings were fragmentary. Most of the mech's internal systems registered as absent or unresponsive. Deeply, thoroughly inactive. But the scan confirmed what his hands had already told him: the alloy was intact. No fractures. No structural compromise. Whatever had happened to this machine, its body had survived.
He started with the surface.
Working methodically from the head down, he cleaned corrosion from the external joints. The alloy resisted most solvents he tried. Nothing in his maintenance kit dissolved the dark buildup that had accumulated in the seams. He found a compound that worked partially, an industrial degreaser meant for human-tech alloys, and applied it carefully with a pick and brush. The corrosion crumbled in places, revealing intact conduits beneath. In other spots, the buildup was too deep, and he had to leave it.
His hands knew this work. Four years of dismantling, cleaning, repairing. His fingers had learned a vocabulary of textures and resistances that no database could replicate. He could feel the difference between a joint that was fused dead and one that was merely corroded shut. He could tell where the alloy was thin versus where it had been reinforced, just by the way vibrations traveled through the surface when he tapped.
The shoulder joints were worst. Both were fused with ancient corrosion, the kind that had seeped deep and hardened over uncounted cycles. He worked them carefully. Solvent, wait, pick, test. Solvent, wait, pick, test. The first joint gave after twenty minutes, the corrosion breaking away in flakes to reveal a surface beneath that was still smooth, still precise. The second took longer.
By the time he reached the torso, he'd freed eleven joints and cleaned the external housing of the primary power conduits. The conduits themselves were a puzzle. They didn't follow any architecture he recognized. Human mechs routed power from a central core outward in predictable branching patterns. The known civilization relics he'd studied in the database had their own signatures: Lithari crystalline lattices, organic-channel patterns from the outer rim surveys. This mech's conduits were neither. They spiraled, branched asymmetrically, doubled back on themselves in patterns that seemed almost deliberate in their complexity.
He traced them from their endpoints inward, mapping what he could. Some were clearly damaged, severed or crushed by the weight of the wreckage above. Others were intact but dormant, carrying nothing. A few showed faint residue of something that might once have been flow, a discoloration in the conduit walls that suggested heat or energy had once passed through.
He made a note on his scanner. Then he moved to the thermal regulation system.
It was buried deep in the torso, a network of narrow channels that he could barely reach with his tools. The corrosion here was different, finer, more crystalline, as though the channels had once carried something that left mineral deposits behind. He cleaned what he could, working with a thin probe and a suction tool, clearing the blockages millimeter by millimeter.
One conduit, near the center of the chest cavity, resisted everything he tried. The crystalline deposit was too hard for the probe, too adherent for the suction. He studied it under his lamp, turning his head to catch the light at different angles. Then he tried a solvent mixture he'd never used before, a combination of two compounds that weren't meant to be mixed, but which his instinct said might work.
The deposit dissolved.
Beneath it, the conduit wall was intact. He ran a flow test. The reading showed clear passage, a channel that had once carried heat through the mech's frame, now open again for the first time in however many centuries.
Tavian sat back on his heels and stared at the reading. Something in his chest shifted.
The mech wasn't dead. It was dormant. There was a difference, and his maintenance instinct knew it the way his hands knew the difference between a fracture and a scratch. Dead things didn't have intact conduits waiting to carry heat. Dead things didn't have systems that were damaged-but-repairable rather than destroyed-beyond-recovery.
He'd been treating broken things for four years. Broken things could be fixed. That was the whole point.
He came back the next off-shift. And the next.
Each session, he went deeper. The thermal regulation system took three visits to clear enough for a partial flow test. When he finally ran coolant substitute through the cleaned channels, the reading showed faint circulation, not enough to function, but enough to prove the system could work again. The mech's body remembered how to move heat, even after all this time.
The power distribution network was larger, more complex. He traced lines from the extremities inward, identifying which segments were damaged versus dormant versus simply absent. Some sections had housing but no internal structure, components that had been removed rather than destroyed. The mech had been maintained before its burial. Parts had been taken from it, carefully, deliberately.
That thought bothered him more than it should have.
The interface port at the base of the skull he avoided. Not by conscious decision. His hands simply worked around it, approaching the cervical joints from the sides, cleaning the neck housing without touching the panel he'd opened during the contact. He wasn't ready to connect again. Not until he understood more. Not until the rest of the machine was ready.
The work changed him, though he wouldn't have said so at the time. His shoulders ached from hours of leaning over the mech's open chest cavity. His knees developed new calluses from kneeling on the debris field's uneven surface. The smell of oxidized metal and ancient lubricants soaked into his suit and followed him back to the Drift, where he scrubbed in the decontamination unit before his shift and hoped no one noticed.
But the work was good. Focused. The kind of absorbed attention that pushed everything else out: the zero-sync evaluations, the pilot hierarchy's contempt, the bone-deep belief that his mind was broken and would always be broken. Here, in the debris field with his tools and the mech's silent architecture, he was competent. Here, his hands knew what to do.
By the fifth session, he'd mapped most of the torso and both arms. The legs were partially explored. The thermal regulation system was partially functional. The power distribution network was cleared down to the mid-torso. The cervical joints were cleaned and mobile. The right arm's shoulder and elbow could move, slowly, when he worked them by hand.
The mech had not responded.
No warmth. No vibration. No sign that his work was anything more than what it appeared to be: one man, cleaning a very old, very broken machine that might never function again.
Tavian re-covered it at the end of each session, replacing the hull fragments over its black form, and walked back to the Drift with his aching shoulders and his dirty suit and his hands that knew the mech's architecture better than they knew anything else.
He was not discouraged. He was a maintenance worker. Maintenance took time. You learned a system from the inside. You understood what it needed. You gave it what it needed, and you waited, and you kept working until the system came back to function.
That was all he was doing. That was all he had ever done.
He would come back tomorrow night. And the night after that. And the night after that.
Until the mech woke up.
